A native of Brasília, Brazil, Dr. Proença is the founder and CEO of VETAHEAD! Dr. Proença has always been passionate about veterinary medicine. She is the first South American to become a Diplomate of the American College of Zoological Medicine (DACZM), with an emphasis on zoological companion animals (a.k.a. exotics). In Brazil, she owned her own private practice exclusive to zoological companion animals.

Dr. Proença did her Zoological Medicine residency at the University of Georgia, where she developed a special interest for ZooMed endoscopy and minimally invasive techniques, collaborating to produce several publications including novel techniques in endosurgery. She is the co-editor of the 2015 Exotic Endoscopy issue of Veterinary Clinics of North America. Dr. Proença has been actively participating in the zoological medicine community, teaching many national and international lectures, courses, masterclasses and wet labs, including endoscopy courses.

MIRANDA SADAR
MV, DACZM

Dr. Miranda Sadar is a graduate of the Colorado State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. After graduation, she completed a one-year clinical internship in zoological, zoological companion animal, and wildlife medicine at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. After finishing a two-year fellowship in wildlife medicine at the Wildlife Center of Virginia, she completed a zoological companion animal residency at the University of California, Davis. Dr. Sadar was an assistant professor at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in their zoological medicine service for two years prior to moving back to Colorado State University as an assistant professor in the Avian, Exotics, and Zoological Medicine service.

In 2016, Dr. Sadar became a Diplomate of the American College of Zoological Medicine (ACZM), with a focus on zoological companion animals. Dr. Sadar’s research interests focus around minimally invasive modalities to decrease stress, both situational and painful stress, in zoological, zoological companion animal, and wildlife species.

COURSE OVERVIEW

This online course provides an intensive lecture on a wide array of medicine, surgery, commonly performed techniques and procedures in rabbits.  It covers aspects of how to set up your practice, rabbit anatomy, husbandry, handling, clinical techniques, common diseases, diagnostic imaging, therapeutics, anesthesia, medicine, and surgery, among other important topics.

The course is aimed at veterinarians and veterinary paraprofessionals (technician, assistant, nurse), as well as respective students with a keen interest in rabbit medicine and surgery.

COURSE LESSONS

DACZM diplomates Dr. Proença and Dr. Sadar teach rabbit medicine and surgery, offering a practical guide to incorporating rabbits in your practice.

Dr. Proença teaches the principles of rabbit medicine and how to incorporate it into your practice, including necessary equipment, specialized diets, recommended medical literature, and charge structure.

Dr. Sadar teaches how to obtain and interpret diagnostic samples and imaging, including hematology; thorax, abdomen, and skull radiography; as well as skull CT.

Dr. Sadar teaches the specific aspects of anatomy, physiology, husbandry, and behavior of rabbits. You will learn how to properly restrain, examine, and perform clinical skills (injections, blood collection, catheter placement, syringe feeding, gastric decompression, nasolacrimal duct flushing, and nasogastric tube placement). She will teach preventative medicine, including common endo and ectoparasite disease management, as well as most common dermatological disorders.

Dr. Proença teaches you how to recognize, diagnose, and manage the most common emergencies in rabbits, inclusing CPR, uterine disorders, urinary disorders, diarrhea, cardiorespiratory disorders, neurologic disorders, liver lobe torsion, and miscellaneous (presentations including heat stress).

Dr. Proença and Dr. Sadar teach how to recognize, diagnose, and treat common diseases that occur on the skull ang GI system of rabbits, including GI disorders (GI stasis, GI bloat, GI obstruction), dental disease (dental malocclusion, dental abscess), otitis (externa, media, and interna), and the approach to head tilt (including E. cuniculi infection). You will learn how to recognize appropriate and toxic medications for the rabbit patient.

Dr. Sadar teaches how to recognize, diagnose, and treat common respiratory and cardio disorders in rabbits, as well as the approach to intrathoracic masses.

Dr. Proença helps you develop a detailed understanding and confidence in rabbit endotracheal intubation, including blind endotracheal intubation, endotracheal intubation with the aid of a rigid scope or fiberscope, and nasotracheal intubation.

Dr. Sadar helps you develop a detailed understanding and confidence in rabbit anesthesia and analgesia, including appropriate monitoring.

Dr. Proença helps you develop a detailed understanding of the principles of surgery in rabbits. She will teach you how to perform orchiectomy and ovariohysterectomy in rabbits and understand important surgical principles to optimize outcomes and avoid complications. She will also cover the principles of incisor extraction and odontogenic abscess marsupializations in rabbits.
